Water samples
after a hike
in the nice part
of the Phoenix Park
and Gardens,
drinking with a friend
on the balcony.
his knees are wet, his socks
are filthy – I’ve made him leave his bottles
in a bag beside the door. he’s
a scientist; spent our stroll
collecting algae
and river
water samples. now
we drink hot whiskies
and gossip about our friends.

Review by John Morrison
What a wonderful, unpretentious, clear tone. The movement echoes, in plain language, the tropes of ancient Chinese poetry (friendship, tromping about, gossiping, drinking), in delightful, light brush strokes.
