AND THIS, John Garmon

AND THIS

And this I say if anyone is listening
The world is surviving our waste
It will be here when we are gone
Write your impressionistic memoirs
Your indispensable geographical facts
We are firefighters from a strange school
Victims of effervescent childhoods
We are spellbound voyagers here
Learning from ghosts we know by heart
Penetrating canon-making writers
Desperate travelers on unknown roads
These are our outward-facing days
And this can’t be clarified by talk
Or the intricate force of breath
No love-sick lyrics can save us
The only place of its kind in this country
Is lost in a culture running everywhere
