Remains of a Marriage
We stand naked
beside the bed soaked in her piss
from way too many beers
the night before
at the bridal shower
where she lost her left shoe.

After our debate on dog/cat intelligence
her mom’s rat dog
scurries to the litter box
chows down on cat turds.
On the bookcase Flannery
curls up on Wise Blood.

After we run five miles
in oxygen debt
I nearly wander
into rush hour traffic.
She grabs my arm
yanks me back to life.

Three stark, humorous, real images of marriage. I don’t know that the three snapshots indicate a comprehensive view of conjugal life, but I also don’t know that such is the point. In fact, I like that it’s the three bits and that’s it.
