The Separation

Life is a metaphor for the errant grill cover in my backyard
and chocolate chips melting in my hands, the feeling
of not standing you before but now I walk around
shouting your name in the best way.
Every time I put the cover back on the grill, the wind
rips it off. Then the dog marks it up. I’m tempted
to give him a bowl of chocolate chips just so
he’ll lie down quiet and not mess things up for one minute,
like when the baby’s asleep and he barks out your name
as if he’s got nothing better to say.
