The At Home Position That I’m In Now After Twenty Years Have Passed
Space as something suddenly occupied
But space as something that has been chosen
This is being within the walls of Branford Price Millar Library of Portland State University
Where it continues to be a special place within it’s stillness
A place of innocent youth choosing to face their destiny
A presentation of the amount of courage required
For the young man that works at the front desk
To continue to present his choice of sexual ambiguity
I am now completing twenty years since I was an undergraduate student at Portland’s Lewis and Clark
College
Twenty years of knowing studies between these walls and floors of Branford Price Millar Library
A modest example as library
But insisting in being a novel statement of human first
Well son of Scotland
There’s no doubt that this morning I woke up in a new suit
With a new profoundness presented by the social fabric
But in the same resoluteness and dedication as found in the Branford Price Millar the Oregonian in full
declaration has revealed at a solid new level that he understands the Scottish condition that I am

Review by Paul Jones
Bowie’s bilingual explorations of himself and his place in America as someone with several lineages in particular Scottish play out in amusing and confusing ways for the author and the reader. A pretty place becomes for example a place of the petty bourgeoise. This son of Scotland wakes “up in a new suit with a new profoundness presented by the social fabric.” But all is not play. The library, the college, are places that help, especially in retrospect, the poet to find something of himself.
