The act of metaphor is uniquely human: an act of projection, definition, research and knowledge, an act of teaching and testimony, an act of love. It is the beautiful curse embedded in our perception, and poets are the most afflicted – once they see it (and they cannot but see it), once they are spotted by one, they have no choice but to put it on paper.
