Snarl
the century & its hidden anatomies,
shuffle two-dimensional
into an obscure book.
Evaporate on the last breaths
of those who lived it,
& answer these pithy slivers,
cruel angles, & the sound
that splits the air to prepare
the way of a riddle rigid
& summoned from the mud.
Too many licks & this cadence
may replace all conversation–

Generally I’m not much for personification, but I admit I like how the idea of the snarling and history and culture and discovery (or hiddenness, if the riddle isn’t resolved) can take on less of a discussion, less a chat or lecture, and more just a deep, guttural animal.
