The Skiff Did Not Carry Him

We were in the channel
At night and a kiss of breeze
The apes quiet, the bugs quiet
And because I was still alive
He was also still alive
Though the skiff did not carry
Him, as he was buried on the island.

In my heart and head
He spoke to me not in words
But in understanding,
As I grew older in the skiff
Still in the channel before the sea
He grew older in understanding,
Rather I began to see who he was
And that he became what he became,
That he saw me now too.

Till we see each other on the edge
Or in a heaven of expectations
Or not see each other because
No dreams come true, we still
Talk despite
This barrier.  It’s
A human imagined barrier.

Because I change he changes.
