AFTER COLD MOUNTAIN 57

glancing ahead in the Celan biography
I read about him going to Hamburg
in 1952 and how he saw women lamenting
a dog being run over by a car “For a dog
they’re yammering!” how he looked forward
to talking with young German writers
“And what did they talk about? Volkswagens.”
instead of “black milk” “that which happened”

Review by Jared Pearce

This poem helps me think about when I’m Celan and when I’m those with whom he wants to speak.  It also makes me wonder what the heck Celan is up to?

Review by Carla Schwartz

I am intrigued by this poem. What makes this a poem? It’s the last line, even though I find the quotes a bit confusing. For example, It appears Celan is speaking the penultimate line, as well as most of the last line, but it seems the speaker should be saying something here, rather than Celan.
